While in Nicaragua, I got to visit not just one volcano, but two! And one of my life list items is to visit a live volcano.
The Makengue Reserve is located less than 10 miles from the Costa Rican border in the south of Nicaragua, off of the Rio San Juan. To get there from DC, we took two planes, a five hour bus ride, and two boat rides. In less than 48 hours we traveled from the capitol of one of the most advanced countries on earth to the heart of the rainforest and jungle. The nearest doctor was hours away, we had no cell or internet service, and were surrounded by all manner of dangerous plants and animals. I loved it.
